An Actor’s “Survival” Job

As an actress, I have never been one to call my other work my “survival job”. The dictionary definition of survival is: “the state or fact of continuing to live or exist, typically in spite of an accident, ordeal, or difficult circumstances.” I am fortunate that I can follow my dream - I don’t see that opportunity as an accident and certainly not an ordeal. Yes, I need other jobs that help me pay rent, buy food and have fun (in fact - multiple other jobs). But I like to think of them as jobs that help me thrive, jobs that keep me afloat while I work toward something bigger.

My advice to you would be to find a job (or multiple), that fulfill you and make you THRIVE. Jobs that are relatively flexible so you continue to be an artist and build your craft. It may take time to find these dream jobs. There will no doubt be some trial and error involved! But when you find what works - you’ll know.

My current thriving jobs include...Barre Teacher, Waitressing, Nannying, and working as a Fit For Broadway Intern (#dreamjob).

  • Barre Teacher: This is my most recent job that I am SO excited about. This job allows (& encourages) me to stay fit, healthy and lets me share my passion with others.

  • Waitressing: It is such a stereotype! And waitressing is definitely not for everyone. But if you can find a restaurant that works with you, it is a great way to make some extra cash. My co-workers are a big perk of my waitressing job. I have a team that has my back and are willing to help out with covers and difficult customers. They are also a great support system for my acting career (as approx 90% of us are performers.)

  • Nannying: This can be such a fun job (if you like kiddies). It is an opportunity to play with kids and get a glimpse of life through their eyes. YES - this is an acting exercise!!!! You are getting paid to get in touch with your inner child. BOOM.

  • Fit For Broadway intern: Need I say much more? I am inspired daily by this community and I am so lucky to be involved with what Jane has created (and all of you!)

Thoughts guys?! :) We love hearing from y'all! Comment below and let us know what your survival jobs have been or how you feel about having a survival job? Thumbs up or thumbs down?
