Day 2 - CueYou (What’s my Cue?)

One of the things that helps me walk into any room (audition or otherwise) and own who I am, is having a cue for myself. A cue in an actor's world can be many things. It can be a musical cue that lets you know it's time to do a specific action or start singing, a lighting cue that shifts the tone in the scene or lets you know where to go onstage, or the most usual, the line before you speak that is the launch of what your character has to say. A cue is your set up. Your launch. Your “ready, set, GO!”

I use this in my personal life too… my cues can be a phrase I know and say whenever I need to that instantly helps me be ME. Something that distills me down to my essence, my he(art). My personal cue is “no risk, no magic”. Yes I found that on instagram. Yes I’m obsessed with it. It gives me the space I need to embrace me and own that I can be myself and be magic. Heart open.

When I say my cue it instantly centers me. It gives me a little extra courage and confidence in whatever setting I'm in. It reminds me to bring myself into things and block out all the noise. It feels calming and reassuring.

Today is about finding your cue.

Exercises & Journal Prompts

CueYou

Start with 3 examples of people you love. List them in your journal.

If you had to guess, what would be their cue? Write down a cue for each person. You don’t have to know them personally, you’re just guessing at what you think your inspirations use as their cues. It will help you develop your own. Below are 3 of my personal inspirations and what I imagine their cues to be:

  • Ellen Page: Lead with honesty

  • Gina Rodriguez: I can and I will

  • Natalie Portman: Learning is beautiful

When we begin to identify how cues connect to how someone shows up fully in life, we can fine tune our cue.

HOW TO:

    • Google/Pinterest/insta search for quotes that feed you.

      • Write five down and circle key words that resonate with you.

    • Ask 5 friends or family members to describe your best qualities or aspects of your character they admire.

      • Circle words from this list that resonate with you.

    • Begin free writing about a few of your favorite memories for 5 minutes. Ask yourself “How did I feel?” “What qualities did I bring to that situation?” “Why did that experience matter to me?”

      • Go back and circle key words from this free write that stick out to you.

    • Begin a list of all of the keywords you’ve gathered and start to form a few CUES for yourself.

    • Lastly, if you feel comfortable, start a thread in the Community Space and share your Cue or your quote finds to spark inspiration for the group! :)

Try out your cue(s):

3 scenarios:

  • Heading into an audition or meeting: giving you your own power before you walk into an environment that feels scary and unsure.

  • Before a show or presentation: Checking in with yourself to make sure your intentions come through.

  • Talking to a loved one or friend about something vulnerable: Giving yourself a boost of courage to be yourself.

During our global healing right now, here are a few questions to add to your cues!

  • Can you create a cue to uplift your day given your current conditions?

  • Can you create a cue to start your morning routine in a way that feels really grounded?

  • Can you create a cue to bring more meaning to conversations?

  • Can you create a cue to motivate movement or well-being for your daily routine?
