#FFB Couple: Cortney Wolfson & Curtis Holbrook

Cortney and I originally met in a Body Conceptions class (I'll dive more into that in her feature!) and I was so excited to hear she was one half of a Broadway couple! :) I've featured a few couples on FFB and it's always amazing to see how couples champion each other in fitness, health, and their Broadway careers. They also have an amazing headshot business...can you say power couple?! (see the bottom of this post for a special FFB offer!) They are gearing up for their wedding in September and are motivating each other every step of the way to be fit for life and FIT FOR BROADWAY!

Cortney Wolfson Bio: I grew up in Lafayette, IN and got my start in show choir.  For midwesterners, show choir is Broadway.  It was my life at the time and eventually led me to the Junior Miss Program- a scholarship competition for high school seniors (think Miss America for 17-year-olds). I ended up placing 2nd Runner-Up at Nationals as Indiana’s Junior Miss and got some great scholarship money out of it. I knew I was definitely done with the pageant scene, but I also knew that I loved the performance aspect. That led me to majoring in Music Theatre at The University of Michigan. After graduating, I moved to NYC and joined the cast of the First Broadway Revival of Les Miserables. I went on to the Legally Blonde National Tour and The Addams Family on Broadway and National Tour before starting in Kinky Boots, where I just celebrated my two-year anniversary.  My parents owned a bar in Indiana while I was growing up- which explains my love of wine.  I’m marrying Curtis Holbrook in September in the cornfields of Indiana at my parents’ house and couldn’t be more excited!! Our two dogs, Tiffany and Emma, will star as Flower Girls in the ceremony. I am a certified makeup artist in NYC and Curtis and I are the owners of Curtis & Cort Photography- a one-stop shop for Actor Headshots and lots of other fun photography. Curtis takes the photos and I do the makeup.

Fun Fact: I have hair that’s ever-changing. I’ve gone from pixie, to bob, to bangs, to blonde. I get bored with a look easily and love a change.

Fun Fact: My favorite thing in the world to do is sit on my balcony with Curtis, our dogs, and a glass of wine and plan our future.

Curtis Holbrook Bio: Howdy! My name is Curtis Holbrook and I'm originally from San Antonio, TX. Being from SA, Tex-Mex is my jam. Eventually that was not great for the waistline, so finding balance and not depriving myself is what I strive for. Ive been very fortunate to have appeared in ten Broadway shows, but even more fortunate to be less than eight weeks away from marrying Cortney Wolfson :)

INTERVIEW:

Q: How did you meet?

A: We originally met doing The Addams Family on Broadway in 2011. A cast member had broken his hand and the company needed an immediate replacement and called the favor into Curtis.  We only did the show together for a total of 10-days, so it was sort of a drive-by friendship. We then reconnected on The Addams Family National Tour in late 2012 where we played opposite each other as Wednesday and Lucas. That was when the real friendship began!

Q: How have you helped each other reach your goals (Fitness, Health, and Broadway)

A:  We tend to do everything together. And by everything, I mean if one of us loses 5 lbs, the other does, too. And if one of us orders a large Dominos pizza, we both splurge together. We love taking class and going the gym together- it’s always an extra perk if working out also means getting to spend time together. That kind of goes for everything else, too. When we have auditions, we read sides with each other, and if one of us is in a show or concert, the other is in the audience. We find that life gets so hectic in this city, that we have to be each others’ biggest champions and find sneaky ways to spend time together, even if it’s amidst auditions, fitness classes, or being a good audience member.

Q: You recently teamed up to complete The Whole30...Can you explain your experience and how you helped motivate each other?

A: Everyone told us The Whole30 would change our lives. We had a really hard time believing it. Curtis initially saw Trainer Bob Harper post about it on Instagram and we are big fans,  so we decided to try it ourselves. We ramped ourselves up for three-months prior to starting; really trying to mentally commit ourselves for the month of April.  IF/THEN on Broadway was about to close, leaving Curtis with much more free time than he’d had in the past. “ I knew the temptation to start drinking beer and watching basketball at 6pm while Cortney was at KINKY BOOTS would be very real once my show closed, and I thought The Whole30 would be a great way to keep myself in-check.” - Curtis. We committed and finished the program and can honestly say that it did, in fact CHANGE our lives. It was much easier to stick to than we thought, and cooking together helped motivate us and keep each other on-track. We both ended the challenge feeling high-on-life: energized, motivated, lighter, more knowledgable, and in control of our diets. So many of our friends and family also decided to do the program and their success stories have motivated us even more.

Q: What’s your favorite healthy meal to make together?

A: We are breakfast people. We love Eggs!!! We also found this awesome sugar-free bacon that we are crazy about and wake up every morning to a Nespresso and a breakfast cooking marathon.

Q: What are ways you keep your relationship strong with all of your individual demands?

A: I always say that what keeps our relationship strong is constantly having new goals together-  Something that gives us a common bond at all times.  It may sound like work, but comes really naturally to us.  We are constantly finding new goals to work toward, together. - Curtis

Q: If you could play any onstage couple, who would it be?!

A:  Curtis: URINETOWN- Bobby Strong & Hope Cladwell

Cortney: ONCE- Guy and Girl… We’re not really right for those roles, but we listen to that cast album like 15-year-old, Broadway-Obsessed, Tween Girls.

Q: Theme Word: AMPLIFY // How does your relationship amplify your life?

A: I always say that my life got SO MUCH easier when Curtis came into it. I felt like I’d spent a huge chunk of my first 27 years of life fixing and working on my relationships. When Curtis and I started dating, I stopped having to fix and work.  He was the thing that was constant and good, and I then had all of this extra energy to put toward other things. My life was immediately Amplified with him it, because I was suddenly available to enjoy every party of it!- Cortney

Q: OK! So, you are a power team with your headshot company! Describe how working together has been healthy for your relationship?

A: We are both actors and have both been fortunate to get to be artistic in separate shows throughout our time here in NYC.  Having a business together has allowed us to be artistic together.  We know that the chances of us ever being cast opposite one-another again are slim, so creating work together through Curtis & Cort Photography has been a fun venture for us. It’s also been interesting to learn more about one-another based on our strengths as business owners.  Husbands and wives know each other on a personal level, but knowing your husband/wife on a professional level is not something every couple gets to do.  When we first started out we had some growing pains- just figuring out where each of our abilities could be utilized best. It’s most definitely given each of us a new appreciation for the other, as partners in the relationship as well as partners in business.
